COD is the Conference Organizing Distribution, used for building conference and event sites online. COD is built on Drupal, the highly-regarded open source content management system. COD is in pre-release stage, but many conference sites are already using it.

So if there's no default preprocess function to add variables to, that means you can't add variables via a preprocess hook in your theme, right?

As noted in Jody's blog-post regarding this same subject, there are a number of tools out there which allow for simple cvs checkout from Drupal's repository. Unfortunately, they need to be installed separately for each website, which can be a pain.
